Finding the Way

THEME:  Jesus is the way -- the only way -- to heaven.
OBJECT:  A map.  I used one printed from my computer.
SCRIPTURE:  Jesus answered, "I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me."  John 14:6
Computers are wonderful things!  There is so much information you can get from a computer.  One thing that I use my computer for quite often is to get a map to show me how to go somewhere.  Several years ago my sister invited us to come and visit them.  Since I didn't know exactly how to find where they lived, I went to my computer and opened up one of my favorite web sites called Mapquest. I typed in my sister's address and the computer thought for a minute and then it opened up a map.  "This is great," I thought, "this is going to be a piece of cake!"  I printed out the map and put it with my things that I was going to take on the trip.
The night before we were going to leave, my sister called me and asked me if I knew how to get to their house. I told her I had gotten a map from my computer and it looked like it would be very easy to find their house.  "I will just take the freeway to the Bowman Drive exit, turn left on Bowman Drive and follow it to your house."
"That's great," my sister said, "except there is no exit at Bowman Drive.  To get to Bowman Drive, you have to exit at Kendale Road and stay on the access road until you come to Bowman Drive."  Wow! That was an important bit of information.  Without it, who knows where I might have ended up?  I learned a valuable lesson that day. Computers and maps are great, but it is always better to get directions from someone who has been there!
If you wanted to find the way to heaven, where would you look?  Well, we have the Bible, don't we?  The Bible will help us to know the way to heaven.  We have other books too.  We have libraries full of books that would help us to know how to get to heaven.  We even have pastors and teachers who will help us to know how to get to heaven.  These things are great, but if we want to find the way to heaven, we need to talk to someone who has been there!  I wonder who that might be?  That's right!  It is Jesus!
One day Jesus told his disciples that he was going to return to heaven to be with his Father.  He told them that one day they would come to be with him.  One of the disciples, whose name was Thomas, said to him, "We don't even know where you are going, how can we know the way?"  Jesus answered, "I am the way, the truth, and the life.  No one comes to the Father, except by me."  If we want to find the way to heaven, we need to look to Jesus, because he is the way -- the only way!
Dear Jesus, as we search for the way to heaven, help us to know that you are the way -- the only way!  Amen.
