Sermon

In God We Trust

Theme

Trust in God

Object

A penny, a nickel, a dime and a quarter

Scripture

Some trust in chariots and some in horses, but we trust in the name of the Lord our God. Psalm 20:7 (NIV)

Do you know what this is? (Hold up one of the coins.) Do you know what this is? (Hold another coin up.) Do you know what this is? (Hold another coin up.) And do you know what this is? (Hold the last coin up.) What are these called? ("Coins" is the answer you are looking for.) What can we do with coins? (Buy things.) What do these coins have in common? (They will say several things but you want them to get to In God we Trust.) Do you know that all American money says In God we Trust? It first appeared on US coins in 1864 and it has appeared on paper currency since 1957. If you were to go to another country and look at their money, it would not say that. (If you have money from another country it is neat to show them.) Can we trust in money? Who can we always trust?

This week I am going to give you some money. (You can give them whatever amount you want; I gave them each a nickel.) Now I know that is not a lot of money, but I want you to take the money and put it somewhere so that you will see it. Put it somewhere like maybe in your bathroom, so when you brush your teeth you will see it. Or put it next to your bed and at night when you say your prayers you will see it. This week it is to be a reminder to you that we can trust God in everything we do. No matter what is happening in our life, we can trust in God just like our money reminds us.

Dear Lord, thank you for our country and that many years ago the leaders in our nation knew that we should not trust in money but in you. Help us this week to remember that no matter what happens in our lives, we can always trust in you. Amen
