Sermon

Wildflowers or Weeds?

Theme

God's love for us

Object

A picture of field of wildflowers or possibly a bouquet of cut wildflowers

Scripture

Romans 5:8

Recently I was driving down a road and I saw this huge field of yellow wildflowers. (show picture of field of flowers) Aren’t they beautiful? You know the funny thing about wildflowers is that , they’re really weeds! We don’t like weeds growing in our yard, do we? But when we see them all blooming like this, they are really gorgeous, aren’t they? It’s all how you look at it, right?

You know, we’re like these weeds too. We don’t mind our parents, we don’t go to bed when we’re supposed to, we talk back, we do things we’re not supposed to do, say things, we’re not supposed to say. We sin! Does God stop loving us? No, he looks at us and he doesn’t see weeds, he sees beautiful wildflowers.

The Bible says in Romans 5:8, “But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” God loves us just the way we are. Now that doesn’t mean he wants us to talk back or do bad things, but it means he will always love us and that Christ died for us and if we believe in him, we’ll live with him in heaven forever.

Sometimes also we look at others and we see weeds. They’re not doing what they should or acting like they should. They don’t treat us like we think they should. Let’s try to look at them as God looks at them and love them as he does and tell them about Jesus. Let’s all strive to see beautiful wildflowers (show picture again) around us and not weeds!

Dear Lord, thank you for the beautiful wildflowers. Let them remind us to look at others as you do and see wildflowers instead of weeds. Amen
